S.M.O. (Sheet Metal Optimizer) is a brand new software program based on Free D.O.M and USR System technology.

It can be used in two major ways:
- CAD/CAM: sheet metal subcontractors, sheet metal industrialisation and production engineering offices
- CAD: sheet metal parts design and engineering offices

SMO is the ideal tool for recovering 3D models, whatever the type and whatever their level of definition (in other words, even 3D models without a "sheet metal attribute" allowing them to be unfolded). (Fig1.)

SMO does it all for you: it reads imported 3D models and automatically transforms them as "sheet metal" models in its own data base. The user then has a whole range of highly powerful tools to unfold the model in whatever way he wants.

The user can, for example, cut up the original model into several parts. Once obtained, these parts remain easily accessible for all types of modifications.

With
SMO it is possible to create entities and thus add the holes, faces (in this case SMO automatically creates the folds), bevelled edges and grooves required for manufacturing. SMO thus completes and adds the finishing touches to the initial design.
SMO can also be used to make interactive dimensional modifications (Free D.O.M.) to all geometric parts.

SMO is thus universally compatible with all Sheet Metal CAD or CAD/CAM softwares since it is able to read and unfold all 3D files in IGES, XMT(Parasolid), SAT (ACIS) or VDA formats.

There is also an SMO Pack for reading CATIA 3D SOLID, UNIGRAPHICS SOLID and PRO/Engineer files in their initial format. And now, other interfaces such as STEP, DWG3D SOLID, CADDS 4 and 5X are available too.

SMO exports to DXF formats in 2D and IGES or XMT(Parasolid) in 3D.

What's more, SMO also acts as a sheet metal expert backup kit for all CAD systems without a sheet metal and integrated sheet metal unfolding module.

SMO can provide highly efficient backup to a CAD system with a sheet metal and unfolding module that makes design time too long.

In fact, general 3D systems can be very good at mechanical type solid 3D modelling but they often require more time to model perfectly defined sheet metal parts.

SMO, on the other hand, offers sheet metal design productivity and expertise because it works directly on the solid 3D draft that can be easily drawn using most good 3D CAD systems on the market.

How does it work?

Modification:
SMO has a range of powerful tools making it really easy to modify, for instance, the part's cut-out structure (Fig.3 &Fig.4), but also corner notches, other notching, fold radii, bend allowance parameters, etc... and all in a matter of seconds.

SMO also has dimensional modification features (linear, circular, angular, etc.).

Creation:
SMO provides creation tools as well (addition of faces, holes, grooves, bevelled edges, etc.). (Fig.4)

Unfolding:
SMO automatically unfolds parts to obtain flattening in line with your own manufacturing rules, press brakes and tooling. (Fig 5.)

SMO automatically creates a 2D file that you can export to DXF or DWG format (standard integration), which you can then transmit to your punching or laser cutting and folding CAM systems.

S.M.O-A: Advanced option
With SMO-A, it is also possible to import from any CAD and automatically unfold models as pipes, cones,  elbows, transitions etc...(Fig 6.)
